Tokyo’s Owl Nest Cafe

On my(Chanda) second trip to Japan, I went with a friend who was thrilled to plan the entire trip for us. We both have similar tastes, and I was excited to go to the owl cafe she found. Lucky for us, it wasn’t far from the train station, and although it was small, we had the cafe to ourselves most of the time we were there.

Like many businesses in Japan, the cafe shared the building with several other businesses, so it was a little hard to see at first. Luckily, one of the employees was standing on the ground floor with an owl advertising the cafe, so we were able to find our way.

When you enter the cafe, the staff give you an introduction on the owls and how you are supposed to interact with them. You will also have to disinfect your hands for the safety of the owls. This course is ¥1000 for 1 hour, which is more than enough time to take pictures and enjoy playing with the owls.

Each of the owls had a unique name and a sheet explaining some things about them. It’s important to pay attention to these because it lets you know about the owl’s temperament and how you should interact with them.

These two owls were my favorite! Their expressions were comical and full of emotion, so they stood out among all the other owls.

These two looked stoic and melancholic. The white owl reminded me of an owl from Harry Potter, and I imagined that he was resting before having to deliver his post. The second owl looked like a wise old sage pondering the mysteries of the universe.

Like people, each owl differed from the next and displayed various characteristics. There were some that you could hold and others who shied away from being touched. Even if you aren’t able to hold any of the owls, it is an interesting experience to be able to be around these magnificent creatures.
